    Abstract

Large-format QWIP (quantum well infrared photodetector) photodetector matrices (FPMs) are intended for use as a photosensitive element in a new generation of thermal imaging systems [1, 2].
The photosensitivity of the QWIP FPM is based on "intersubband" transitions of charge carriers at the size quantization levels in energy quantum wells (QWs) formed by quantum-well layers and wide-gap barriers [3]. By varying the thickness, material of the QW, or the "height" of the barrier, one can control the photosensitivity spectrum (PS) of such matrices. The spectral regions of 8–10 µm and 3–5 µm (“windows” of atmospheric transparency) are of maximum practical interest.
