Abstract

Unique word - orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (UW-OFDM) is known to feature an excellent bit error ratio performance when compared to conventional OFDM using cyclic prefixes (CP). In recent papers linear and non-linear UW-OFDM receivers have been investigated and compared for proper data vectors consisting of QPSK and 16-QAM symbols. In this work we derive the widely linear minimum mean square error (WLMMSE) estimator for the application to UW-OFDM in combination with real and therefore improper data vectors. For the investigated modulation schemes BPSK and M-ASK our simulation results indicate a significant performance gain of the widely linear estimator over strictly linear methods.
