Abstract

Polymer backsheets are intended to protect the power-generating and conductive components of PV modules (cells, connectors) from environmental influences/stress, ensure mechanical stability and act as electrical insulators in accordance with the required safety specifications. Reliability studies on aged glass/backsheet (BS) modules have shown that the most common BS failures are cracking, delamination and yellowing. Material cracks were mainly found in PA (polyamide), PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) and PET (polyethylene terephthalate) BS outer layers. In the case of PA-based BSs in particular, an increased occurrence of BS cracking in the field was observed after just 4 to 7 years of use (around 11-12 GW of PV with PA-BSs were installed between 2010 and 2015)
