Magnetism in Solids: Hysteresis

Research output: Conference proceeding/Chapter in Book/Report/Chapterpeer-review

Abstract

Hysteresis is an fundamental property of the behaviour of magnetic materials. Numerous indispensable applications in everyday life, ranging from permanent magnets to electric motors and magnetic recording, rely heavily on particular facets of hysteresis. The purpose of this short contribution is to give a compact introductory overview of the general aspects of magnetic hysteresis. Following an introduction, in which we discuss the basic properties of hysteresis loops, we review some of the most common models for simulating magnetic hysteresis phenomena. Furthermore, we illustrate the fundamental relation between the hysteresis phenomenon and the existence of magnetic domains. We also give an outline of the principal experimental methods used to characterise magnetic hysteresis in solids. Finally, we will discuss hard and soft magnetic materials and some selected practical applications of magnetic materials that depend on specific hysteretic behaviour.
