Laser-induced graphene sensors using sustainable components for chemical sensing

Abstract

In this work, we evaluate the suitability of various biobased materials for the fabrication of electrochemical sensors. The working and counter electrodes are based on laser-induced graphene (LIG), a highly innovative material allowing to manufacture conductive 3D porous graphene by direct irradiation of a, usually polymeric, substrate with a laser. Electrochemical LIG sensors usually rely on further additive processing, including the printing of a reference electrode and leads from conductive materials (e.g. silver ink), and a dielectric to allow the submersion into the solution containing the analyte (reference electrode: Ag/AgCl). Here, we employed for the substrate, the dielectric, and the leads sustainable and even biodegradable materials and evaluated their suitability for electrochemical sensing.
