Abstract
Wireless sensor networks have to be very flexible and self-configuring, providing an easy way to be deployed. This is a feature that is required due to a wide spectrum of possible applications and deployment scenarios in which they can be used. They can support different kinds of tools and applications in distinct areas, such as agriculture, military, health care, home or industry automation and others. An environmental surveillance system supported by a WSN is presented in this work. The main feature of this system is to locate and track inhabitant's moving behaviour. The system has been implemented using Iris Motes which were placed in different rooms in a building. In order to simplify the deployment and monitoring of the WSN, this project investigated and used an interface called MoteView, which represents a graphical user interface tool. The use of temperature sensor is investigated in order to track people and the results performed in this work required developing custom TinyOS components to implement data acquisition, data transmission and data reception.
