    Abstract

Unique word orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (UW-OFDM) prevents intersymbol interference by introducing a unique word (UW) at the tail of each symbol. Compared to cyclic prefix (CP)-OFDM, UW-OFDM in general features a better bit error ratio (BER) while having a slightly lower bandwidth efficiency. In this work, the constraints on the UW are weakened, with the dedicated goal to increase the system's bandwidth efficiency. We propose a modification of the so-called non-systematically encoded UW-OFDM scheme that enables an increase of the bandwidth efficiency by around 5%. The effects of the proposed modifications on the BER as well as on several other performance measures are analyzed.
