    Abstract

We have developed a radio frequency (RF) transponder based on a surface acoustic wave (SAW) device (on a LiNbO 3 substrate) that can be used at temperatures of up to 400degC. This paper compares the performance of several SAW metallization and packaging technologies. Thermal aging and cycle tests of the devices were performed. The transponders are shown to be suitable for wireless sensing issues in harsh industrial environments in two pilot applications.
